Known as the most complex joint in the body, the knee relies on 10 muscles to function. Knee problems are common, troublesome and can seriously affect a person's quality of life. Below are some common causes of knee pain, categorised by the age-group you'll often find them in.

Abnormal movement of the kneecap, often due to injury or anatomical abnormalities

Detachment of the cartilage from the knee joint's surface

Meniscal problems

Wear and tear of the shock absorbing tissues of the knee called the meniscii

Osteoarthritis

Wear and tear of the knee joint's surface

Injuries to the bones of the knee joint, sometimes caused by a fall

Synovitis & tendinitis

Inflammation of the lining of the knee joint or the tendons around it

Referred pain from elsewhere

Back, hip or ankle problems can cause irritation around the knee

Meniscal problems

Injury to the shock absorbing tissue of the knee called the mensicus

Ligament injuries

Most commonly the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or the medial collateral ligament (MCL)

Patellar instability

Often caused by early wear and tear of the cartilage of the knee cap
